ST. CATHARINES TORCH CLUB
BRIEF HISTORY
As the St.
Catharines Torch Club approaches it's 40th year, and the end of the century and
millennium, it seems appropriate to record the history of the Club. The St.
Catharines club is relatively young, having been founded 36 years after the
establishment of the first Torch Club in Minneapolis in 1924. However, we have
some distinctions worthy of note. We are the only surviving Canadian club, and
have been recognized by Torch International as the outstanding club 3 times. We
have had 19 papers published in the Torch magazine, one of which won the 1989
Paxton award and in 1996 another was runner up for the award. One member has
served as president of the International Association
1967-68,and
another as Director at Large.
In the
early days, expansion of Torch clubs was achieved by means of a self-appointed
professional organizer. In Canada, however, established clubs played important
roles in creating new clubs. In 1961 there were only three Torch Clubs in Canada
- in Hamilton, London, and Windsor. The Hamilton Club had been established in
1937 through the efforts of the Buffalo, N.Y. club. Windsor was an extension of
the Detroit, Michigan, Club established in 1951. The Hamilton Club helped in
establishing the London, Ontario, Club in 1954. The Hamilton Club had two
International Torch presidents: F. R. Murgatroyd, Q.C. (1946-47) and Dr. C. H.
Stearn (1953-54). A strong club, it had averaged about sixty members, including
a vigorous group from McMaster University.
Although
the Hamilton club has passed on, along with the clubs in Windsor, London,
Toronto, and Grand Valley, it played a significant role in the establishment of
our club. However, one man looms large in the history of St. Catharines Torch
Club, and indeed, also that of the International Association of Torch Clubs
(IATC). The young physician named Edgar Peer joined Torch club in Hamilton in
1950, although he had already moved to St. Catharines, hence he was really a
commuting member.
Dr. Stearn,
from time to time suggested that Dr. Peer should see what could be done about
establishing a club in St. Catharines. As the quiet pressure and frequent
suggestions continued, in the spring of 1960, Dr. Peer found himself in his
living room with a dozen St. Catharines friends talking about Torch with Dr.
Stearn. The group decided to attend the next meeting of the Hamilton Club to
"smell it out"
They were
very much impressed by the experience, and as a result the first meeting of the
St. Catharines group was arranged for September 1960. The paper was given by one
of the Hamilton
members -
Mr. Fred Smith, a very capable Secretary of that club (1).
The St.
Catharines Club charter was presented on November 23, 1960, by Dr. Crayton,
long-time Secretary of International Association of Torch Clubs.
The
Hamilton group not only provided the initial spark and inspiration, but very
practical help as the group began their own -two more papers through the first
critical year were given by Hamilton. All other papers were provided by the St.
Catharines men, so that, from the beginning, membership in this club has been
understood to include the responsibility for providing the majority of the
papers.
Dr. Peer,
by his own admission, was a bit reluctant at first, as he felt he was "no
organizer" but, in the early years, he introduced many new members, bringing
guests to most meetings, and made well thought-out contributions to the
discussion at the end of the presentation of papers. He went on to the
presidency of IATC in 1967-68 and was recognized at the international level with
the Gold Award. At the February 1996 meeting, Edgar was presented with a plaque
recognizing his contribution to the St. Catharines Torch
Club.
Another
gentleman to whom the St. Catharines Club owed its survival (during the neonatal
period), and much of its subsequent growth and development, was, Mr. Craig
Swayze, journalist and active supporter of rowing in St. Catharines. He was the
first and long-time secretary of the club.
The club
thrived through the 60s and 70s, growing from 27 charter members to a peak of 58
members in 1972 and 1974. The 80s were leaner years in membership, with a low of
23 in 1982-83. Fortunately, there has been a revival more recently, and the club
seems to be at least maintaining strength. As the club grew strong, it was able
to help establish clubs in Toronto and Grand Valley (Kitchner-Waterloo area),
and St. Catharines members spoke occasionally at these clubs. In recent years,
St. Catharines has established a good relationship with the Buffalo Torch Club,
and the two clubs exchange speakers from time to time.
The
question with which the IATC wrestled for many years was that of admitting women
to membership. Motions introduced at the annual conventions to this end were
usually defeated until 1973, when IATC voted to leave the decision of admitting
women to the membership up to the individual clubs (2). St. Catharines did not
embrace this idea immediately, but finally in 1982-83, Christina McNaughton made
club history as the first female member. Since then, we have had 3 women serve
as president, and in 1997-98 had 8 female members.
In the
meantime, for many years, Ladies night, usually in February, was the only time
that the spouses and significant others saw what it was that drew their men folk
away from home once a month. Ladies Night was once a more of gala occasion, with
optional formal wear, toasts to the ladies, and wine laid on by the club. Once
the women were admitted as members, the annual event became "Spouses' Night", in
recognition that, in some household, the wife was the Torch member (we also have
had several husband and wife memberships). More recently, the St. Catharines
club followed the practice of the Buffalo club in welcoming wives and companions
of members at all meetings. Most of the members today would probably agree that
these developments, once so unthinkable have been positive improvements, keeping
in step with the contemporary time.
It is not
surprising that in 39 years of history, the club has had a variety of meeting
places. In the first year, the club met at the Queensway Hotel, and then in the
Leonard Hotel, back in the days when downtown hotels had a significant status in
the city. We have soared to the heights of the 13th floor of Brock University
Tower (the site of the Brock University Faculty Club at that time), and the
short-lived Top of the Flame on the 11th floor of the gas building. By contrast,
we met for several years in the basement of Logan's Restaurant at the Grantham
Plaza. We had to negotiate passage through the bar-rooms of Eddy's Place and
Alexander's Restaurant at the Fairview Mall although those Greek smorgasbords at
the latter were very enjoyable, the proximity of the kitchen in both locations
created a noise problem. We were at the historic Yorkshire House, The Club
Heidelberg and had two spells at the Holiday Inn. Once again, we expect to be on
the move in the 1998-99 season.
