OMHC The ONTARIO MARINE HERITAGE COMMITTEE or OMHC was formed in 1975. The founding group of divers and historians had been involved in Marine Heritage studies previously and worked together on the site of a Naval Slip at the Naval & Military Establishment at Penetanguishene in the mid 70's. They decided about that time to form the OMHC and their first major project was the study of the Hope Island wreck. This 5 year study documented the wreck site soon after its discovery and monitored the sites destruction by sport divers as fittings etc. were slowly removed form the wreck. The site was subsequently identified as the MARQUETTE and remains to this day a popular shallow water wreck. Since 1975, members of the OMHC have been active in many areas of Great Lakes Marine Heritage. The following is a partial list of some of the work: The Naval Slip at Penetanguishene The Hope Island Wreck Nawash Site Navy Hall Archaeological Studies The Lion's Head Wreck-The Old Concord The Rudder Survey The Port Stanley Wreck The Nimrod Wreck in the Inner Bay of Long Point Lost Ports of Lake Huron Prehistoric Shoreline Study , Fathom Five National Marine Park Mystery Schooner X, Long Point |
